Venezillo canariensis "Canary dwarf pillbug"
It was difficult to discern where, exactly, this species originated; but it was first documented by Dollfus in 1893 in the Canary islands. Since then, the species has had some distribution around the globe, although not as successful as Venezillo parvus.
There are some slight visual differences, although canariensis has similar dark back markings to V. parvus, it is not always a solid color, and many members of the species display a mottled color, similar to calico patterning.
This species flourishes best in a moist environment, and would do well in a tropical or subtropical terrarium as a clean up crew. Due to being so slow to breed, we do not recommend housing with other isopods as they may be out competed, but would do well with other types of invertebrates or springtails. They are small and docile, and pose no threat to vulnerable amphibians and reptiles.
