Platyarthrus aiasensis "Ant woodlouse"
This species of isopod is a very small species closely related to Platyarthrus hoffmannseggi "the ant woodlouse". Aiasensis is native to the mediterranian but has been naturalized throughout the world, including America. Although it is found in America, it is still considered a rare find, only being sighted in a handful of states.
They are very similar in appearance to Trichorhina tomentosa, but have a ridged, textured back and chubby antenna.
Aiasensis is typically found residing with ants, but unlike hoffmannseggi, can thrive without the addition of waste from insects to their diet. We do recommend offering waste from roaches or millipedes if available. Although aiasensis is known for living in ant colonies, they may only be recorded living with certain species of ant or it may be a gradual process to introduce themselves, so we do not recommend introducing them to a captive ant colony.
