Known and widely beloved for its intricate, skeleton-like vein pattern; thin, white spidery veins that contrast starkly against the lime green of the rest of the leaves. Fittonias find their native home on the forest floors of South America, primarily Colombia, where they proliferate with great success and fulfill a niche at the very bottom of the forest ecosystem. Fittonia don’t get taller than 7 or 8 inches, with stems that cluster and clump, forming dainty, diminutive bushes. When a mature stem reaches flowering size; it will terminate in a small, unassuming stalk with barely noticeable flowers that quickly form seeds that spill out and grow more Fittonia on the surrounding understory floor. In cultivation, Fittonia is surprisingly adaptable; acclimating to room humidity with little trouble whatsoever and making the perfect statement piece for small, desktop bowl arrangements and fairy gardens.
