Hoya obovata was first described in Indonesia in the mid 1800s. Hoya obovata is naturally found growing on other plants and tree trunks, and does well when offered a trellis wood, or moss wall to support itself and climb. It will also trail out of a pot, but gets better growth when given support for its vines. It has large, round leaves with a dimple at the tip and is often called the sweetheart hoya. It will produce white flowers with a red-pink inner portion. The "Splash" variety has speckles of silver throughout the leaves.
