Hoya obovata ‘splash’
One of the lesser known large Asian Hoyas that deserves just as much recognition as the likes of Hoya clemonsorium or undulata is the big, beautiful Hoya obovata. Large, thick, paddle-shaped leaves grow along ropelike, thick vines which provide more than ample support for the incredible size and heft that well-foliaged vines can amass. When this gentle giant reaches the flowering stage, peduncles develop much like most other Asclepiads; with buds quickly forming in batches of between twenty and forty on the tip, which expand and burst into fragrant, white and purple blooms. On this specific clone; ‘splash’, gentle dabs of silver speckling adorn the surface of the giant, matte green pads. When potting this species, care should be taken to find a pot that won’t tip over when a plant as heavy as a mature Hoya obovata is grown in it; so the species usually commands a large, hefty Terra-Cotta vessel, though this is only really useful for large specimens, and smaller cuttings or plants can be grown without issue in plastic.
