Product Details
Though variegation is a mutation that usually puts a severe hindrance on the growth rate of a plant; the unique growth pattern of Hoya carnosa ‘compacta’ opts for a lower-efficiency photosynthesis from chlorophyll present in the upturned leaf-backs, where variegation isn’t obstructing tissue. However, the aesthetic benefits of variegation are not lost-’compacta’ albmarginata still eloquently displays its beautifully contorted leaves, densely-packed vines of crumpled, stiff leaves that look almost festive, something truly unparalleled. Of course, the best part of any Hoya carnosa is the incredible flower, and the minimally obtrusive foliage of ‘compacta’ gives nothing but the best view of large, pastel-pink floral clusters that waft an indescribable, heavenly perfume. Unlike most variegated plants, variegated ‘compacta’ are not really susceptible to sunburn, as Hoya leaves are thick and almost succulent, with a glossy surface that’s lent the whole genus the common name ‘wax plants’. Propagation is quite simple, so long as the cut end of the stem is pressed firmly into soil of most any variety, and growth is surprisingly fast for the unconventional appearance of ‘compacta’, too. Expect a boisterous, showy vine that easily fills out a hanging basket, and the opportunity to thrive as a centerpiece in any collection.
