Product Details
Begonias, in the houseplant and floral trade, have always been somewhat of a cornerstone, whether in a florist, or a nursery. However, before the advent of Begonia breeding, for elaborate, carefully crafted hybrids and varieties, there was a very clear ‘top dog’ amongst the existing species of Begonia in cultivation. Begonia
maculata, a spotted Brazilian beauty, grew above any competition. Large, top-heavy leaves grow on deceptively thin, pinkish canes that usually require some level of support; usually with a stake. Cane Begonias are perfect for the houseplant trade, and
maculata tends to be the base for all the great cane hybrids. The ubiquitous spotted, teardrop shaped leaves are visible even in its progeny many generations down the line; and its influence on the Begonia hobby will never be undone. However, even though so many new crosses and mutations have been isolated since
maculata reigned supreme; it is still one of the most perfect Begonias for household conditions. A well-lit windowsill, quickly draining soil and frequent watering is all that’s needed to maintain a hearty specimen of this species, which can be propagated, trimmed, and trained to live on for decades.
