Begonia elaeagnifolia
Begonia is a genus that has had the opportunity to establish itself around the globe; and there is a true plethora of incredible diversity amongst the species found outside of Asia, where the majority of terrarium Begonias originate. For example, the African species Begonia elaeagnifolia makes for an incredibly elegant terrarium plant. Dainty, thin vines sprawl out from a central growth that allows for both easy display and easy propagation. Higher humidity is recommended for this adorable little gem, however it can make due with levels lower than most species considered typically for terrariums. Small, shield shaped leaves are studded along the short stem which allow for very aesthetic little vines. A unique property of this species is how it grows in nature; a true obligate epiphyte that finds its homes along the nooks and crannies in tree trunks; forming a large, mound-shaped ‘bush’ that grows from what minimal soil is wedged into the trunk originally. This is a very useful bit of knowledge for those who wish to use this species in terrariums, as it can be grown in just this manner, the opportunity to create a hanging bush without the need for elaborate mounts, or extra work. When working with Begonia, it’s important to consider a wide variety of potentialities, and even though elaeagnifolia may not be as popular as large cane hybrids or spiky Bornean species, it really should not be discounted from its role as the ideal vining Begonia.
