Begonia ‘Baby Dress’ is one of the most underappreciated rhizomatous-type rex Begonias to make it into the mainstream hobby. There is little negative to be said about this plant; from its thick, lime leaves to stubby, short petioles that make it an unparalleled groundcover. Among most Begonias, sitting water on leaves is essentially a death sentence; but in this unique little jewel, thick, waxy leaves are impervious to water-induced rot, or at least very resistant. This little cross changes dramatically from a young plant to mature; with the cute, ephemeral ‘freckled’ juvenile leaves giving way to majestic, perfect yellow arc-like veins, and a seriously unique shade of lovely lime. Due to the small size of this plant, it makes an ideal choice for arrangements; whether those be terrariums, hanging baskets or bowl gardens, and it will be right at home in most soil mixes, so long as they can hold a usable level of water, and drain to prevent roots from drowning in sitting water.
