Alocasia x amazonica
Due to their unique growing habits and typically overlooked role as a smaller, dark-leaved understory plant, Alocasia typically get a bad rap in the houseplant world. However, the delightful hybrid Alocasia x amazonica serves to dispel the typically negative connotations usually associated with alocasias. It is a robust, sturdy hybrid between A. longiloba and A. sanderiana, which merge beautifully to create a plant that can withstand ambient humidity, lower light, and a versatile range of quickly-draining soils. Though Alocasia occur only within a limited range of the lush Bornean jungles, they’re right at home amongst the collections of the discerning gardener.
This plant will require bright indirect light, water when the top inch of soil dries and allow excess water to drain away as they are prone to root rot. Alocasias need high humidity, ideally 60% or higher, and use a well-draining soil mixture that can retain some moisture.
